Final voting starts now, get off your chuff... Time is fleeting (said in the voice from the Rocky Horror Picture show)... and time to finish the selecting of the TSF team of the decade for the noughties. I have not the time, and hardly the inclination to review all the players for the remaining positions, so I won't, but we'll give you the voting options. Players missing, as you will have picked up from the earlier fuller voting synopsis', will be because they have not played enough tests in the period, or are just plain not good enough to be considered according to the TSF luminaries who decided on the final candidates for each position... So, I made it to the blindside for the voting, so next on the block, the sevens. A no brainer, we know McCaw is the man here, but also worth mentioning the names of Marty Holah of Waikato, who had his moments in 2004 while McCaw was injured, and as a specialist seven was second only to McCaw through the noughties. Also Chris Masoe, while not a specialist seven, he was an ideal bench option for much of McCaw's time in the seven black shirt, as he could cover 6, 7, or 8, and did without letting the side down over the time. Those who plied their trade for the All Blacks through there, but not on the voting sheet are Latimer (whose time might yet come in the 'tens'); Braid, who was just plain not good enough; and Newby, who buggered off overseas before we knew if he was good enough or not! Scott Robertson I have slotted in as a number eight candidate.. Josh Kronfeld finished his career in 2000, but with the bulk of his tests in the 90s did not play enough to make the voting papers. So the number eights, Scott Robertson, as that is where he played his best rugby in black, before being 'Mitched' (shafted but not knowing why), but a solid performer who I think could have been a very good eight had he been given more time here. Ron Cribb - just 15 tests over two seasons, before his head got too big to fit on the Air New Zealand domestic flights, so he had to head offshore where planes have bigger doors... He looked like the second coming of Buck with a dash of Zinzan thrown in, but starts that shine brightly often shine for a short time too - as was the case here... Rodney So'oilao - formed part of one of the best trios the All Blacks have ever fielded. Strong, committed, fit, and still battling on for his spot. Raging against the dying of the light? Watch this Super 14 for details! Kieran Read has now had 16 tests over two seasons so gets added to the voting forms. However, I expect his best is yet to come, and the tens might be his era. The majority of his tests will be played, barring injury over this time. Right, halfbacks, it's going to be like living in the past again - Marshall versus Kelleher, with Cowan and Weepu thrown in for shits'n'giggles. But it's the Cantab and the Otago/Waikato Porn Star shagger that the battle will be between I am sure! First fives. Old battles renewed, but with Dan the man Carter on the voting sheets, you almost could not include Spencer and Mehrtens. Three pretty handy players indeed to have worn the black jersey for the All Blacks over the years - well over 2000 test points between the three of them too. At twelve, a lot of journeymen have filled the jersey in the last ten years, Alatini, Gibson, and Tuitupou for starters. But getting their names to the ballot boxes, the following - Mauger, McAlister and Nonu. McAlister I think the best is yet to come, Mauger, well, perhaps the best is yet to come, and Nonu, the best is happening right now, after many years spent at thirteen and further out on the wings. Centre, candidates for the team of the year, well, we may as well add the to the sheet, but they'll have a tough battle getting past Tana Umaga. Anyway, joining the great All Black, Ieremia and Conrad Smith. There have been a few other 'fillers', but no one deserving to have their names on the TSF list - in our opinion anyway! Right, the wings, I'll lump all these together, and just play the two highest polers left and right, alphabetically if they are both left or right wing specialists!! There have been some pretty classy wingers, and those onto the voting papers are Lomu, Sivivatu, Howlett, Rokocoko and Wilson. Hell, I would be happy to have any two of those five named, and even those missing out - some could go on to be pretty handy - Guildford, Wulf and H Gear are all class waiting to be fulfilled. Finally, fullback, again, one man stands well out from the crowd, New Zealand's most capped 15, and really the only one worth even considering here. Although that is being a little bit unfair on another pretty classy fullback through this period, Leon MacDonald. Not forgetting Cullen, but his best test football had been in the 90s, still worth a shout perhaps. Rounding out the voting form are two classy players who we will see the best of in the next ten years, and who will probably have a Mils / Panadol relationship and battle for the 15 jersey too. So there we go, get voting, and I'll get off my chuff and name the TSF team just before the Super 14 starts next week. Next week - alright!!
